It's not exactly what you think.

I recently read a great book that I wanted to share. As a life coach who deals a lot with life purpose issues, I often talk to people about what they “should” be doing with their lives as far as their job goes. Everyone is searching for their dream job. But few of us probably spend much time thinking about how to go about getting into it once we find it.

The book “Quitter” by Jon Acuff does just that. I love the fact that Chapter 1 is titled ‘Don’t quit your day job.’ With humor and the insight of someone who has gone through this process recently, he talks about all the ups and downs of planning one’s escape from a dull job to your dream job. It isn’t all pie in the sky either. He talks about proceeding cautiously and keeping your priorities in line. Sure, working at a dream job is great but it can be made less so if you have to starve for two years after quitting your current job because you didn’t plan very well for the in between time.

One of the other chapters is titled ‘Falling in Like with a job you don’t Love’. Dreams need to incubate. It takes a while for them to take shape and begin to manifest. During that time, you have to eat, pay the mortgage and put gas in your car. Even though your day job isn’t ideal, it can provide a secure place from which to launch your dream job.

I keep this book close at hand as a tool to pass on to clients that are in that place of feeling like they have to quit their job right now. This book provides a good overview of how that journey can be a scenic one.
