One Man's Treasure...

Family Photos

...is Not Necessarily Another Man's Treasure.

One of the most common questions I hear from clients is "What can I do with all these pictures?" Family photos are everywhere! Most everyone has at least one, if not five boxes of photos that they don't what to get rid of but they don't know what to do with them either. I recently spoke to a group where this topic came up. The other audience members offered a number of possibilities:

  • Take them to Walgreens and get them digitized
  • Put them in albums and have a party to pass them on to other family members
  • Create a collage or a blanket

The person asking the question said she had already put them in albums, taken them to a family reunion, and came home with all the albums because NO ONE wanted them! We tend to think that other people should want the same things we think are valuable or important. I'm here to tell you that that is rarely the case...and that's O.K. We all have the opportunity to surround ourselves with the things we love. But we don't have the right to insist that our treasures be treasured by others. If you're holding on to family pictures (or any other items) because you enjoy having them, great!  If you're holding on to them because you believe other family members will want them, ask them. You may be surprised by their answer.

Here is the Question:

What are you keeping because you believe someone else should want it?  Are you willing to find out if that's true?
