Ask for what you want, even in this job market

January 16, 2011

One of my favorite shows on the radio on Saturday mornings in Marketplace Money. They cover money from a lot of different angles. Yesterday I heard a story about looking for a job in today’s job market. Believe it or not, the advice from a recruiter and a professional development specialist is to resist the urge to apply for absolutely everything, and to focus on the type of job you truly want and are qualified for. With unemployment at around 9% it would seem to make sense to look for something that will provide you with a paycheck, even if it’s not in your field or is way below your qualifications. But according to the story, these are the types of resumes that are weeded out first. Someone too qualified will tend to get bored quickly and, according to the article, even if the employee doesn’t leave, their discontent will inevitably affect their performance. It’s a great reminder that we should ask for what we want. That doesn’t always mean it will be easy to find, but it’s certainly worth looking for.
