It should have been obvious, but.....

January 19, 2011

Have you ever found yourself stopped in your tracks by a seemingly innocuous action? That phone call you’ve been meaning to make……for the past 6 months. The appointment you know you need to get to, but keep cancelling. I’m sure you’ve had at least one such experience, right? I was recently talking to a friend and she’s got one of those phone calls that needs to be made, but hasn’t. We also have a mutual friend who’s been waiting for years for her life to begin, never claiming responsibility for making something happen. It made me look at things in my own life. I've got a few things that I've been artfully avoiding myself. I started wondering why; why do we avoid such innocent-seeming actions?

Well, it actually has nothing to do with the action itself. It has to do with the belief behind the action. What does making the phone call represent to you? or What do you stand to lose by expressing yourself in a long overdue conversation? That’s where the real insight is.

The next time you’ve got something that you just can’t seem to get to, take a look at the underlying belief. That will probably clear up why it hasn’t happened yet. Once you know what’s really going on, you can decide if you want to do anything differently.
