Ouch!

January 25, 2011

Most of us have been exposed to the idea that we create our own reality, that the choices we make give us the life we are currently living. That applies whether we’re happy or unhappy. It’s a bit of a hard pill to swallow to know that each of us is 100% responsible for our own lives. Period. Although I believe that to be true, what does that mean for those who are currently living in challenging circumstances? Who would choose to create unhappiness?

Well, today I read something that finally made sense of that aspect of things. I started reading Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” and that’s where I read the following: “You either create or allow everything that happens to you.” That was the big Ouch! We allow things to happen to us because it’s easier than standing up for ourselves. This makes perfect sense to me because I’ve been in situations in which it was not what I wanted but it was easier to say nothing than to declare a point of view and exert my will.

It certainly adds a new dimension to situations for me. I've gotten used to the idea that I’m responsible for all my actions. Now I know that my choosing inaction is just as defining.

Where has your life been shaped by allowing circumstances to direct your path?
