Who knew? I sure didn’t! Did you know that it’s a very common phenomenon for women to feel separate from their bodies? I recently have been made aware of the fact that for most of my life I have been at odds with my body and considered it something apart from myself. What is it that makes us women disconnect from our bodies? I’m sure it’s a whole host of reasons. Honestly, it’s easy to do. Who wouldn’t want to be able to do whatever they wanted to without consequences? That’s sort of what happens when we forget that everything we eat and all the thoughts and emotions we have get recorded in the body. It becomes the evidence of our weaknesses. Who wouldn’t want to get further away from that? But our bodies are also so much more. They are the vehicle that allows us to see and smell and touch and hear and taste (and dance!). They are amazing machines that allow us access to the entire world, if we choose to pursue it. It’s easy to blame them when things go wrong, but how often do we appreciate and love them just the way they are, with all of their imperfections?

I’m grateful to finally be reconnected with my body. Instead of being an adversary, I can now feel the importance of being an advocate for it. Instead of being two separate things, now we are one. It still feels a little strange, but we’re getting used to each other.
