The gift of challenges

January 5, 2011

We all try to achieve a certain amount of comfort in our lives. Let’s face it, comfort is nice! It can mean enough food when we’re hungry, enough toys to enjoy ourselves with or enough routine so that we don’t have to think about much on a day to day basis. But, comfort can also breed complacency and fear. What happens if something changes our current circumstances? What happens when our comfortable situation ends?

I think it’s good to challenge oneself from time to time. For one, it breaks up the monotony of the daily grind but it does something else as well. It allows us to feel a sense of accomplishment. If we are never challenged, we never learn what we are capable of, or how far we can push ourselves and still have more to give.

I’m not saying it’s easy or even fun all the time, but that feeling of victory we get when we achieve that goal or keep a commitment is worth more than another few days of comfort. It increases our capacity to deal with things, both expected and unexpected.

In this season of resolutions, when they become inconvenient or difficult, just hang in there one more day. You can always fall off the wagon tomorrow if you still want to.
