Santa has his list of who is naughty and who is nice. Based on that information, people either get a gift or a lump of coal. Similarly, each of us has our own lists of who is naughty and who is nice. The naughty folks in our life get lumps of coal: our judgment, negativity, and frustration. The nice folks get the gifts: our time and energy and love. Santa consults his list just once a year, while we make adjustments to our lists on a daily basis. Although those adjustments may seem to be based on people's behavior, they are actually based on our attitude toward and reaction to their behavior. So, instead of expecting others to change their behavior in order to make our Nice list, we could choose to give them our gifts regardless of their behavior.
